The Architectural Design Studio II, as part of the University of Calicut's curriculum, focused on exploring how socio-cultural, geographic, and economic factors shape both urban and rural environments. The studio particularly emphasized the organic development of urban settlements, analyzing the historical forces that have influenced city formation. Special attention was given to traditional settlements, such as Thekkegramam, a Brahmin settlement situated near a river, and other communities that evolved around temples.
The project progressed through multiple phases, beginning with an in-depth contextual study aimed at understanding the physical and social landscape of the area. This included analyzing both the built and unbuilt environments, as well as the socio-economic and socio-cultural dynamics of the region. Based on this comprehensive analysis and data from case studies, a design brief was developed. The final phase involved creating a settlement proposal for Thekkegramam, capturing its distinctive historical and cultural significance.
