Architectural Design Studio II, as per the University of Calicut’s guidelines, aimed to understand the socio-cultural, geographic, and economic factors that shaped urban and rural built environments. The focus was on organically evolved urban settlements, particularly markets, which played a vital role in city development. Markets grew out of necessity, adapting to socio-political changes and integrating into the urban fabric. Palayam, once a military barracks, became Kozhikode’s largest market and remained significant over time. The studio examined the proposal to relocate the market, evaluating its impact on tradition and culture, and analyzed whether relocation was feasible or if alternative solutions were better
The studio project was designed and executed in several steps. First, a contextual study of the Palayam market and its surroundings, including built and unbuilt spaces, socio-economic, and socio-cultural aspects, was conducted. Based on the case study analysis and data collection, a design brief was prepared, followed by a proposal for the market's relocation to a new site
